What is basketball discipline? Basketball discipline is your ability to carry out the rules and regulations of your team. You have to be able to put your talents into the overall team's plan. We all have to know what the other man is going to do. It is our ability to work together. You have to overlook the aspect of what you can do, as compared to what you can do for the team. This is discipline - discipline is not easy: then, nothing ever is that is worth getting, is it? There will be many times when you want to do it your own way. You can't always do it your way. There are may ways and styles of playing basketball. I want you to understand that we are going to play it my way. Discipline not only teaches what not to do, but more importantly what to do. Discipline is the key to our success. My interests are your interests because what you do reflects our team. If the team wins, we win: if the team loses, we lose.
Can you sacrifice? What sacrifices do you need to make? In today's society, you have to bend and sacrifice certain things. Sacrifices will come differently for each individual. When basketball starts, you will have to dedicate yourself to your studies and then to basketball. sacrifice is giving up your time that means a great deal to you so you can acheive something in another field. It's going to be hard not to watch tv, not to go out on dates, not to stay up late when you have to study. You are going to have to budget your time time wisely in order to get basketball and your studies in. You have to sacrifice many things in order for us to win. "What we are is God's gift to us. What we become is our gift to God."
"Enthusiasm will take you to the next level of excitement."
" If you pay the price you will reap the reward of winning."
"There is no glory in defense - just victory!!!"
"Confidence is when you are absolutely sure you can do it."
"If you hoot with the owls at night, you can't soar with the eagles at dawn."
"The most effective leadership is by example."
ARE YOU A WINNER?
The average effort results in mediocrity, the sub-par effort results in failure and the maximum effort breeds success, and one's ability perform over his ability, over his maximum, results in greatness."
T.E.A.M = TOGETHER EVERYBODY ACHIEVES MORE
"Improve yourself and you will improve the team."
"Extra effort is an inner desire"
"Good defense brings about game victories"
"You don't always have to have the lead if you have the heart to come from behind."
THE HABIT OF WINNING
BY VINCE LOMBARDI
Winning is not a sometime thing. You don't win once in a while. You don't do things right once in a while. You do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. Everytime a football player goes out to play, he's got to play fromthe ground up from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's okay. You've got to be smart to be no. 1 in any business, but more important, you've got to play with your heart and every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second.
It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they're there to compete. They know the the rules and objectives when they get into the game. The objective is to win fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules but to win. In truth, I have never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, did not appreciate the grind and the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for, needs discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat.
I don't believe in the brute nature of man, or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God and I believe in human decency. I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear,is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle victorious.
DO YOU THINK LIKE A WINNER?
WHAT ARE THE TRAITS THAT MAKE ONE MAN A WINNER AND ANOTHER MAN A LOSER? THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS IN HOW A MAN THINKS. HIS ATTITUDE WILL GOVERN HIS ACTIONS.
A WINNER IS ALREADY TO TACKLE SOMETHING NEW.......... A LOSER IS PRONE TO BELIEVE IT CAN'T BE DONE.
A WINNER ISN'T AFRAID OF COMPETITION........ A LOSER EXCUSES HIMSELF WITH THE IDEA THAT THE COMPETITION BEAT HIM OUT.
A WINNER KNOWS HE'S SOMETIMES WRONG AND IS WILLING TO ADMIT HIS MISTAKES........A LOSER CAN USUALLY FIND SOMEONE TO BLAME.
A WINNER IS CHALLENGED BY A NEW PROBLEM..... A LOSER DOESN'T WANT TO FACE IT.
A WINNER IS DECISIVE........ A LOSER FRUSTRATES HIMSELF WITH INDECISION.
A WINNER REALIZES THERE IS NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT TO GET A JOB DONE....... A LOSER IS PRONE TO PROCRASTINATE WITH THE HOPE THAT THINGS WILL BE BETTER TOMORROW.
A WINNER THINKS POSITIVELY .....ACTS POSITIVELY....... A LOSER USUALLY HAS A NEGATIVE ATTITUDE AND A NEGATIVE APPROACH TO EVERYTHING.
IF YOU WANT TO BE A WINNER,THINK LIKE A WINNER.... ACT LIKE A WINNER.......AND SOONER THAN YOU THINK, YOU BE A WINNER.
ATTITUDE TOWARD WINNING

-Teamwork is fundamental at every level of basketball.
-That means passing up a shot if another player is open for a better one.

"You can't get much done in life if you only work on the days when you feel good." JERRY WEST
It's not so much what you say,
As the manner in which you say it;
It's not so much the language you use,
As the tone in which you convey it.
"COME HERE", I sharply said,
And the child cowered and wept.
"Come Here", I said, he looked and smiled,
And straight to my lap he crept.
Words may be mild and fair,
But the tone may pierce like a dart;
Words may be soft as the summer air,
But the tone may break my heart;
For words come from the mind
Grow by study and art,
But tone leaps from the inner self,
Revealing the state of heart.
Whether you know it or not,
Whether you mean or care,
Gentleness, kindness, love and hate,
Envy, anger are there.
Then, would you quarrels avoid
And peace and love rejoice?
Keep anger not only out of your words,
Keep it out of your voice.
One evening and Old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside of people.
He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.
"One is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.
"The other is Good - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
